Aceh Besar District Prosecutor's Office executes caning for three convicted gamblers
Banda Aceh (ANTARA) - The Public Prosecutor of the Aceh Besar District Prosecutor’s Office executed the caning of three convicted gamblers whose cases have attained final and binding legal force (inkrah) based on the decision of the Jantho Sharia Court. The caning execution took place in the courtyard of the Al Munawwarah Grand Mosque, Jantho City, Aceh Besar Regency, on Tuesday. The execution against the convicts was carried out on a provided stage and in front of a large public audience. It was also witnessed by officials from the Aceh Besar Regency Regional Leadership Coordination Forum (Forkompinda). The three convicted gamblers who underwent the caning were Hendra, sentenced to nine lashes after deduction for three months of detention or three lashes; Muzakkif, sentenced to 12 lashes minus three months of detention or three lashes, resulting in nine lashes; and Ilham, sentenced to 11 lashes minus three months of detention, resulting in eight lashes. The three convicts were declared proven guilty legally and convincingly of violating Article 18 of Aceh Qanun Number 12 of 2025 amending Aceh Qanun Number 6 of 2014 on jinayat law. Before undergoing the caning, the three convicts underwent a health examination by a team from the Jantho City Community Health Centre. After being declared fit, they were allowed to proceed with the punishment. The Head of the Aceh Besar District Prosecutor’s Office, Wisnu Murtopo Nur Muhamad, stated that the caning execution was a decision of the Jantho Sharia Court that has attained final legal force. According to him, the caning execution serves as a lesson for the public to obey and comply with the jinayat qanun, which is the implementation of Islamic sharia in Aceh Province. “This caning execution demonstrates to the public that the prosecutor’s office is committed to enforcing law based on Islamic sharia Qanun. The implementation of this punishment is to create a deterrent effect and prevent others in society from imitating it,” said Wisnu Murtopo Nur Muhamad.
