Aceh becomes chaotic
Aceh becomes chaotic
From Republika
As a resident of Aceh, I should be proud of our town Banda Aceh, being an Adipura award winner. This must be attributed to the hard work of its citizens. However, it is ironical that a day of rainfall is enough to cause flooding throughout the town. This indicates that the functionaries of the town administration are lacking seriousness in managing the situation, despite their access to ways and means for taking necessary measures.
The society might suspect that the morale of government officials has been declining, partly because their terms of office will soon end, or they might be busy lobbying to retain their positions.
This is evident from the fact that the road leading to Iskandar Muda Airport -- which has a historic significance because the independence proclaimers Bung Karno and Bung Hatta were passing that road when visiting Aceh province -- has no drainage system.
Also, Jl. Panglima T. Nyak Makam, which leads to the governor's office and Lampineung Stadium, which is in the central part of town, have no ditches. In addition, litter is scattered all around Jl. T. Nyak Makam and the irresponsible earth digging by the water company and Telkom have made the condition of the area worse. Yet no party feels guilty about creating inconveniences for the town dwellers.
It is here the authorities should have greater concern about the improvement of the environment to make our town a better place to live in.
