Aceh administration
must be audited

The central government has channeled trillions of rupiah to
Aceh, but the province has hardly enjoyed the fruits of
development. What is wrong with this situation?

Apparently, it is common practice in Aceh for a company that
has won a tender for a government project to be required to set
aside a bigger portion of the funds allocated for the project
either for the separatist Free Aceh Movement (GAM) or high-
ranking officials of the provincial administration.

Many companies, therefore, decide to take up the projects even
though most of the funds intended for them end up in the pockets
of certain GAM officers or government officials, because they can
always abandon the projects less than halfway through for
security reasons. In this way, the projects are left unfinished
and the companies concerned can enjoy the remaining funds.

As this situation has continued for many years at the expense
of the ordinary Acehnese, it is now time that the Aceh provincial
administration be subjected to auditing.

The governor, regents and other regional administration
officials must account for this matter.
