SINGAPORE (AFP): Malaysian ace Rashid Sidek had to summon all
his experience to defeat an Indonesian rookie for a quarterfinal
berth in the Konica Cup Singapore international badminton
championships yesterday.
Sidek, the joint sixth seed in the men's singles, was given a
fright by aggressive left-hander Arief (eds: one name) before
emerging with a hard-fought 15-12, 15-11 victory in 61 minutes.
The Malaysian number one will fight it out with former world
champion Joko Suprianto of Indonesia on Friday for a place in the
semifinals. Suprianto conquered Kim Hak-kyun of South Korea 15-9,
15-9.
