Accountant in West Jakarta Fabricates Mugging to Escape Laptop Instalments

An accountant with the initials AC has had to deal with the police after fabricating a story. He made up a tale about being mugged in Cengkareng, West Jakarta, in order to be freed from his laptop instalments.

The case began when AC went to the police station and filed a report on 22 July 2026. AC explained to the police at the time that he had been mugged on Jalan Kampung Malang, West Cengkareng.

In his report, AC stated that his bag containing Rp 1 million in cash and a Lenovo Legion laptop had been seized by muggers. AC claimed to have suffered a total loss of Rp 27.3 million.

“In the report, he also claimed to have sustained a stab wound to his left arm while resisting the perpetrator,” said West Jakarta Metro Police Resmob Unit Head AKP George Ruben.

The Resmob Unit of the West Jakarta Metro Police Criminal Investigation Department then launched an investigation by processing the crime scene, taking statements from witnesses and the complainant, AC, and gathering other evidence. However, the investigation uncovered a number of inconsistencies, eventually revealing the fact that AC had filed a false report.

After the team conducted an in-depth investigation, it turned out the incident was entirely fabricated by AC. It was later discovered that the laptop AC claimed had been stolen by muggers was actually being repaired at a service centre in Mangga Dua.

AC’s claim that his arm was injured while fighting off a mugger was also disproven. It later emerged that AC had deliberately injured himself with scissors in the bathroom to convince the police he had been mugged.

Ruben revealed that AC fabricated the case to escape his laptop instalments. The police report was intended to be used as the basis for filing a claim with the financing company.

“The laptop is worth approximately Rp 27.3 million and only about five instalments have been paid. Using the police report stating he was a mugging victim, the complainant intended to file a claim with the financing company so that the laptop instalments could be stopped,” said West Jakarta Metro Police Resmob Unit Head AKP George Ruben AY, in his statement on Saturday (25/7).

During questioning at the police station, AC admitted he had fabricated the mugging because he felt burdened by the laptop instalments.

“The main motive was to obtain an insurance claim so he would no longer be burdened by the laptop instalments,” he said.

AC’s fabrication was uncovered after the police detected a number of inconsistencies. Firstly, the laptop he claimed had been stolen by muggers was actually at a service centre.

“The laptop was never actually stolen, but was instead at a service centre in the Mangga Dua area undergoing repairs,” Ruben said.

This fact was corroborated by a service receipt and proof of purchase that were successfully verified by investigators.

AC then visited the West Jakarta Metro Police to take responsibility for his actions. He apologised after his fabrication was exposed by the police.

He conveyed his apology via a video taken at the police station. Before apologising, AC, who was wearing a brown t-shirt with the words ‘The Jogja’, gave a clarification at the police station.

“I apologise to the Indonesian National Police team, the Cengkareng Police team, and the West Jakarta Police for my false report regarding my belongings being snatched or mugged,” said AC.

AC stated he was desperate to file a false police report because he wanted to claim insurance so he could be freed from the laptop instalments. It is known that AC was paying off a Lenovo Legion laptop worth Rp 27.3 million in instalments and had only made five payments.

“My motive for doing this was because I wanted to claim insurance and stop the instalments, all due to economic reasons,” he said.

AC acknowledged that the report he made was based on false information. He stated he would retract the report.

“And I apologise for the report I made and am willing to retract the report and will not repeat it again. Thank you very much for your assistance,” he said.
