Access to Pameu-Geumpang Road Reopened Following Landslide Closure
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Ministry of Public Works (PU) has confirmed that traffic access on the National Road section from Pameu, Central Aceh Regency, to Geumpang, Pidie Regency, Aceh Province, has been reopened for two-wheeled and four-wheeled vehicles since 28 April 2026, after previously being closed due to a landslide.
The landslide occurred on Wednesday (22/4) at points STA 36+600 to STA 37+000 along approximately 400 metres, following heavy rainfall in the area.
Landslide materials consisting of soil, large rocks, and vegetation buried the road surface, making traffic access impassable.
As an emergency response measure, the Ministry of PU through the Aceh National Road Implementation Agency (BPJN) installed landslide warning signs and deployed a team to accelerate the clearing of landslide materials at the site.
Heavy equipment deployed included one bulldozer unit, three excavator units, one breaker unit, and three dump truck units.
Minister of PU Dody Hanggodo stated that the handling was carried out quickly to restore the main transportation route to function.
The handling was conducted swiftly, focusing on debris evacuation, heavy equipment deployment, and ensuring the main transportation route could quickly return to operation.
“Currently, the road can be traversed by four-wheeled vehicles on a limited basis, and we are continuously working to restore it to normal while still prioritising safety aspects,” explained Dody, quoted from a press release, Thursday (30/4/2026).
The Ministry of PU is also preparing permanent handling measures to ensure the road’s condition is safer in the long term.
Acting Head of BPJN Aceh Yusrizal Kurniawan stated that permanent handling will be carried out through the ongoing Geumpang-Pameu Road construction work package.
“BPJN Aceh will soon prepare an appropriate and comprehensive handling design. Thus, the central cross road can continuously be safely traversed for logistics of goods and agricultural products, as well as serving as an alternative route for the western and eastern crosses of Aceh Province in case of disruptions or disasters,” said Yusrizal.
Plans for permanent handling at the landslide site will be implemented through slope protection to prevent follow-up landslides and to enhance the safety and comfort of road users.
Although road access has been reopened, the Ministry of PU urges the public to remain cautious when passing through and to follow the instructions of on-site officers, as the potential for follow-up landslides still exists, especially during rain.
