Access to Mount Bromo Tourist Area Temporarily Closed During Nyepi Day
Probolinggo, East Java (ANTARA) - Access to the Mount Bromo tourist area in Probolinggo Regency, East Java, has been temporarily closed starting from Wonokerto Village, Sukapura Subdistrict, to commemorate Nyepi Day of the Saka New Year 1948 and to welcome Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijriah.
“The closure refers to Circular Letter No. 604/SE/PHDI-KAB/II/2026 from the Indonesian Hindu Dharma Parishada (PHDI) of Probolinggo Regency, effective from Thursday (19/3) at 06:00 WIB until Friday (20/3) at 06:00 WIB,” said the Head of the Youth, Sports, and Tourism Office of Probolinggo Regency, Her Mulyadi, in the regency on Thursday.
During this period, he continued, all tourist activities to the Mount Bromo area are completely halted to honour the Nyepi Day observance by the Tengger community.
Moreover, this moment also provides an opportunity for Muslims, particularly tourism practitioners, to perform silaturahmi with their families ahead of Eid.
The closure serves as a form of interfaith tolerance as well as an effort to maintain the solemnity of worship.
“The tourist access closure is a form of respect for the Tengger community observing Nyepi Day so they can worship in peace and devotion. On the other hand, we are also providing opportunities for tourism practitioners celebrating Eid al-Fitr to gather with their families,” he said.
He urged the public and tourists not to visit on the closure dates as all access will be impassable for tourist activities.
“For tourists planning to visit after the reopening on 21 March 2026 afternoon, we suggest booking tickets online well in advance because there is usually a surge in visits after the closure,” he said.
He hopes that the public can interpret the Nyepi and Eid al-Fitr moments as opportunities to strengthen tolerance and togetherness.
“May this sacred moment bring peace, strengthen mutual respect, and bestow blessings upon everyone,” he stated.
