Access to Mount Bromo Tourist Area Closed Until Friday to Commemorate Nyepi
Access to the Mount Bromo tourist area in Probolinggo Regency, East Java, has been temporarily closed starting from Wonokerto Village, Sukapura Subdistrict.
This closure is in observance of Nyepi Day for the Saka New Year 1948, as well as in anticipation of Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijriah.
“The closure refers to Circular Letter No. 604/SE/PHDI-KAB/II/2026 from the Indonesian Hindu Dharma Parishada (PHDI) of Probolinggo Regency, effective from Thursday (19/3) at 06:00 WIB until Friday (20/3) at 06:00 WIB,” said the Head of the Probolinggo Regency Youth, Sports, and Tourism Office, Her Mulyadi, on Thursday, citing Antara.
During this period, all tourism activities to Mount Bromo are completely halted as a sign of respect to the Tengger community conducting Nyepi worship.
“The closure of tourist access is a form of respect for the Tengger community observing Nyepi Day so they can worship in peace and devotion,” said Her Mulyadi.
Additionally, this moment provides an opportunity for Muslims, especially tourists, to gather and maintain family ties ahead of Lebaran.
“On the other hand, we are also providing opportunities for tourism actors celebrating Eid al-Fitr to gather with their families,” said Her.
He also advised the public and tourists not to visit the Mount Bromo area during the closure period, as access is guaranteed to be impassable.
“For tourists planning to visit after reopening on 21 March 2026 afternoon, we suggest booking tickets online well in advance because there is usually a surge in visits after the closure,” said Her.
Her also hopes that the momentum of Nyepi and Eid al-Fitr can strengthen tolerance and togetherness in the community.
“May this sacred moment bring peace, strengthen mutual respect, and bestow blessings upon all,” he said.
