Accepting with resignation

The Javanese word legowo has become popular following the failure of former president Abdurrahman " Gus Dur" Wahid to satisfy the health requirements for standing in the presidential election. Used by both Javanese and non-Javanese people, this word is often misinterpreted.

Legowo means accepting something unpleasant in a sincere manner and with resignation. If the General Elections Commission (KPU) had declared Gus Dur eligible to stand but nobody voted for him in the election, for instance, he would also have to accept the fact with resignation.

Therefore, this term signifies sincerity and fair treatment for the person concerned, as well as all other parties upholding the law in this country. Everybody should be pleased to accept the outcome of the people's choice.

Any deviation from this meaning would produce a historic blunder with far-reaching consequences. Donor countries would consider Indonesia's elections flawed and possibly review their loan policies.
