Academic Calls for Handling of Ex-Jampidsus Corruption Case Without Privilege

Academic from the Faculty of Business Law at Bina Nusantara (Binus) University, Muhammad Reza Syarifuddin Zaki, has asserted that the handling of the alleged corruption and money laundering (TPPU) case involving the former Deputy Attorney General for Special Crimes (JAM-Pidsus) must proceed professionally and transparently without special treatment. Reza noted that the series of investigative dynamics, from the search actions and the naming of suspects to the discourse of transferring the case to the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), has captured widespread public attention and sparked legal debate. “This case is interesting to study from an academic perspective because since the search process, the naming of suspects, the change in the status of case handling, to the emergence of demands for the KPK to take over the case, everything has generated debate in the public sphere,” Reza said during a discussion titled “Supremacy of Law or Legal Privilege? Testing the Public Sense of Justice in the Handling of the Ex-Jampidsus Case” in Central Jakarta, Monday (27/7/2026). Responding to claims of criminalisation made by Febrie, Reza emphasised the importance of maintaining legal certainty without ignoring the ongoing evidentiary process. He explained that referring to the Constitutional Court’s decision, the determination of suspect status is considered valid if supported by at least two sufficient preliminary pieces of evidence, including initial indications of state financial loss. “If every person named as a suspect then claims they are being criminalised, then legal certainty will become increasingly difficult to achieve,” he stressed. Given that the alleged state loss in this case is classified as very large, Reza requested all law enforcement officers handling the case to work extra seriously and independently. To ensure law enforcement proceeds objectively without intervention or structural obstacles, he sees the need for direct attention from the head of state. “If necessary, President Prabowo Subianto also needs to pay attention to the resolution of this case so that law enforcement runs optimally,” he concluded.
