Academic: Alleged Corruption by Former Jampidsus Involves Large Sums, Handling Must Not Be Special

JAKARTA, VIVA – Muhammad Reza Syarifuddin Zaki, an academic at Bina Nusantara University’s Business Law Faculty, has said that the handling of the corruption case implicating the former Junior Attorney General for Special Crimes (Jampidsus) must be carried out professionally and without special treatment.

According to Reza, the dynamics of the case have drawn public attention, from police investigators searching a number of locations, the naming of a suspect, changes in how the case is being handled, to calls for the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to take over the case to avoid potential conflicts of interest.

He made the remarks at a discussion titled “Supremacy of Law or Privilege of Law? Testing the Public’s Sense of Justice in the Handling of the Former Jampidsus Case” held in Central Jakarta on Monday, 27 July 2026.

“This case is interesting to examine from an academic perspective, because from the searches, the naming of a suspect, the change in the status of the case’s handling, to the pressure for the KPK to take over, everything has sparked debate in the public sphere,” Reza said.

He also responded to statements by FA, who claimed to be a victim of criminalisation after being named a suspect and questioned by investigators.

According to Reza, this argument raises questions when linked to the cases previously handled by FA during his tenure.

“If everyone named a suspect then claims to be criminalised, legal certainty will become ever harder to achieve,” he said.

Reza explained that, based on Constitutional Court rulings, a person may be named a suspect if sufficient preliminary evidence exists, including an element of suspected losses to state finances.

In his view, police investigators have set out the alleged state losses in the case, so this element is considered fulfilled.

Furthermore, Reza said the alleged state losses in the case involving the former Jampidsus are extremely large. For that reason, he said, the handling process must be carried out seriously without granting special treatment to any party.

“If necessary, President Prabowo Subianto should also pay attention to the resolution of this case so that law enforcement runs optimally,” he said.
