Academic: Alleged Corruption by Former Jampidsus Involves Large Sums, Handling Must Not Be Special

An academic from the Business Law Faculty of Bina Nusantara University, Muhammad Reza Syarifuddin Zaki, has stated that the handling of the alleged corruption case implicating a former Junior Attorney General for Special Crimes must be conducted professionally and without special treatment. According to Reza, the dynamics of the case have become a matter of public interest, from the searches of several locations by police investigators and the naming of a suspect, to changes in case handling and the growing calls for the Corruption Eradication Commission to take over the matter to avoid potential conflicts of interest. This was conveyed during a discussion titled ‘Supremacy of Law or Legal Privilege? Testing the Public’s Sense of Justice in the Handling of the Former Jampidsus Case’ held in Central Jakarta on Monday, 27 July 2026. ‘This case is interesting to examine from an academic perspective because from the search process, the naming of a suspect, the change in case handling status, to the emergence of pressure for the KPK to take over, everything has sparked debate in the public sphere,’ Reza said. He also responded to a statement by FA, who claimed to be a victim of criminalisation after being named a suspect and questioned by investigators. According to Reza, such an argument raises questions when considered alongside the cases FA previously handled whilst in office. ‘If every person named as a suspect then claims they are being criminalised, legal certainty will become increasingly difficult to achieve,’ he stated. Reza explained that, based on a Constitutional Court ruling, a person can be named a suspect if there is sufficient preliminary evidence, including an indication of state financial loss. He assessed that police investigators had presented the alleged state losses in this case, thereby fulfilling that element. Furthermore, Reza noted that the alleged state losses in the case involving the former Jampidsus are of significant value. Therefore, he said, the process must be handled seriously without granting special treatment to any party. ‘If necessary, President Prabowo Subianto should also pay attention to the resolution of this case so that law enforcement can proceed optimally,’ he said.
