Abundant Data, Vanishing Reason
We currently live amidst a flood of data. Every day we are presented with graphs, percentages, survey results, and claims ‘based on data’ on social media. Ironically, fewer people truly understand how to read them. Data is positioned as ‘absolute truth’ without considering that behind every figure there is always a process, an assumption, and a human decision that shapes it. This phenomenon is also becoming visible on university campuses. Students often use data as a supplement for assignments or research, but do not necessarily understand its quality. Many of them merely search for figures that support their arguments, while contradictory data is ignored. Survey results can appear convincing, even though the respondents do not represent the actual population. The phrase ‘Data Doesn’t Lie’ is always used as a shield to strengthen arguments. However, we must also recognise that while data indeed does not lie, the way humans choose, process, and present it can produce a narrative that contradicts the truth. This condition is further reinforced by the development of AI (Artificial Intelligence). Various applications can now generate graphs, analyses, and even statistical interpretations in a matter of seconds. This convenience certainly has benefits, but it also carries risks. When students become too dependent on AI without understanding the analytical process, they slowly lose the ability to think critically. Yet the essence of statistics lies not in the ability to produce figures, but in the ability to question whether those figures are trustworthy. Ultimately, the greatest challenge in the big data era is not a lack of information, but a lack of reason to understand it. Universities should bear the responsibility of producing graduates who are not only capable of processing data, but also of questioning, interpreting, and using it responsibly. Because abundant data is useless if we lose our critical reasoning towards it.
