ABRI announces major reshuffle in its ranks

JAKARTA (JP): The Armed Forces (ABRI) has announced a big
reshuffle in its mid-level command structure, affecting 92
officers in the Army, Navy, Air Force and National Police.

The changes, which were announced on Friday, were induced in
part because 31 of the officers are approaching the mandatory age
to prepare for their retirement.

Among the most significant changes include the following:

* Brig. Gen. Agum Gumelar, the chief of staff of the Bukit
Barisan Military Command, will move to Jakarta to become an aide
on political and defense affairs to ABRI Chief Gen. Feisal
Tanjung.

* Brig. Gen. Rizal Nurdin will become Bukit Barisan chief of
staff.

* Brig. Gen. Suparman will become territorial assistant to the
Army Chief of Staff.

* Maj. Gen. Purwantoro, currently the Military Academy
Governor, will become Commandant General of the ABRI Academy.

* Brig. Gen. Ilyas Yusuf will become the Military Academy
Governor.

* Col. Syahril M.S. will become chief of staff of the Udayana
Military command to replace Brig. Gen. Agus Salim.

* Maj. Gen. (Marine) Joko Pramono M., the Commandant of the
Marine Corps, will become the Navy's Inspector General to replace
Maj. Gen. (Marine) Gafur Khalik.

* Brig. Gen. (Marine) Suharto, currently deputy governor of
the Naval Academy, will become the Commandant of the Marine
Corps.

* Rear Admiral Sutanto M.M. will become the Commandant of the
Navy Staff and Command College.

* Maj. Gen. Arif Tawil, the current Southern Sumatra Police
Chief, is promoted as Assistant for public security and order to
the ABRI's Chief of General Affairs.

* Brig. Gen. Ismet Ibrahim will be chief of the Southern
Sumatra Police.

* Brig. Gen. Ali Hanafiah will become chief of the South and
Southeast Sulawesi Police.

* Brig. Gen. I Ketut Ratta the chief spokesman of the National
Police is retiring.

* Col. Nurfaizi, the current chief of the detective
directorate of the Jakarta Police, will become chief spokesman of
the National Police.

In all the changes affect 31 officers in the Army, 24 in the
Navy, 13 in the Air Force and 24 in the National Police. (emb)
