Abrasion Triggers Landslide in Kuala Enok, 14 Homes Affected

A landslide struck the coastal area of Kuala Enok Village, Tanah Merah District, Indragiri Hilir Regency, Riau, on Tuesday morning (16/6), affecting at least 14 homes. Four of the houses were swept into a river not far from the sea mouth.

The incident, which occurred at the Kuala Enok Market area at 09:45 WIB and later at Jalan Kampung Jawa AEC around 10:00 WIB, was caused by abrasion from wave impacts and exacerbated by unstable soil contours.

“Our team is still at the location assisting victims and remaining on alert to anticipate similar events,” said the Head of the Indragiri Hilir Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), R Arliansah, on Wednesday (17/6).

The landslide damaged public facilities, including a temple, a public road, and a port. Dozens of families have evacuated to the homes of relatives in safer areas, while BPBD Inhil has set up an emergency post.

Total losses are estimated at Rp320 million. No fatalities or injuries were reported.

Arliansah explained that the BPBD Inhil team, besides helping to evacuate residents, is also identifying the impact of the landslide and coordinating with authorities at the sub-district level. “We have already distributed basic food aid. The urgent needs now are immediate handling in the form of securing the location and special assistance for vulnerable residents such as the elderly and toddlers,” he concluded.
