Abolition leads
Abolition leads
to lawlessness
From Sinar Pagi
The issue of 'abolition' or revoking all charges on Soeharto
has drawn quite a number of responses, both those in favor and
those against it.
As he is probably close to death, some consider it appropriate
-- of course, for humanitarian reasons only -- to grant him a
pardon.
But this could create a precedence and the question is: Would
the other corrupt officials from the previous administrations up
to today's reform government be given such a pardon in the name
of humanity?
Some of us seem to be easily moved by Soeharto's physical
condition. However, such an emotional response dangerously
weakens law enforcement in our country. I'm afraid Indonesia may
soon become a lawless country.
