Abandoned Pier in Klungkung's PKB Area Becomes a Favourite Spot for Anglers
An abandoned pier in the Bali Culture Centre (PKB) area, located in Gunaksa village, Dawan district, Klungkung, Bali, has become a favourite spot for anglers. Although it has been neglected for years, the remnants of this infrastructure, which was damaged by abrasion, have transformed into a hidden paradise for fishing enthusiasts.
As observed by detikBali at the location on Sunday (17/5/2026) afternoon, the area of this former mega-project, which cost hundreds of billions of rupiah, is increasingly visited by anglers. The half-destroyed concrete breakwater and rusty pillars have been repurposed as natural reefs where various types of predatory fish gather.
This has attracted the attention of anglers, not only from Klungkung but also from neighbouring areas such as Gianyar and Denpasar. One of them is Ramadani (30), a resident of Denpasar. He said that he deliberately drove far to Klungkung to experience fishing in this abandoned pier area.
“I found out about this spot after it went viral on TikTok. This is my first time here. It’s great here, there are no boats passing by. Usually, I fish in Benoa. There are a lot of boats there,” Ramadani told detikBali.
According to him, because there are many broken concrete structures underwater, it is possible that fish such as large groupers, barramundi, and Giant Trevally (GT) like to nest there.
Ramadani admitted that he did not mind the poor condition of the pier’s infrastructure and its somewhat eerie atmosphere at dusk. For him, the character of the waves on the Gunaksa coast and the abundance of ruins provide a unique challenge for anglers who use casting or bottom fishing techniques.
He also said that many anglers have been coming since morning. Some come from morning to afternoon, some from afternoon to evening, and even some fish all day like Ramadani.
“I sometimes stay from night until night,” he said.
The increased activity of anglers at the Gunaksa Pier has brought its own blessings to local residents.
Komang Didi Astika (28), a coffee and snack vendor in the pier area, admitted that his business has greatly benefited since this area went viral among anglers. He himself does not know for sure about the abandoned mega-project.
“I don’t really know about the project being abandoned. But I am grateful that now there are many people fishing here every day. Especially on Saturdays and Sundays or in the afternoon, this coast is full of motorcycles and cars parked. Especially since it went viral on TikTok,” said Didi while brewing coffee for a customer.
For those of you who are anglers and curious to experience fishing in this spot, access to the Gunaksa Pier is quite easy. From Denpasar city, simply drive along the Ida Bagus Mantra Bypass road heading east towards Klungkung Regency.
After entering the Bali Culture Centre (PKB) area of Klungkung and reaching the red bridge, take the left lane at the intersection towards the former quarry area. Follow the rocky dirt road towards the coast. The location of the ruins of the abandoned pier is right at the end of the coastal road, next to the PKB project area.
Not far from the pier, you can also enjoy Lake Gunaksa, which was a former quarry. Although the Gunaksa Pier has rusty iron that is hit by waves every day, and the development of the PKB area is uncertain, the dynamics on the ground show that people always have ways to revive neglected public spaces.
