A wise way to self-reward without emptying your wallet
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Self-rewarding, or appreciating oneself, has become part of the modern lifestyle, particularly among young generations who face high daily pressures.
Daily routines and personal burdens often trigger boredom, prompting the urge to reward oneself as a form of positive escape.
However, the boundary between self-rewarding and impulsive wastefulness often becomes blurred. Repeated purchases of ice cream, contemporary coffee, fast food, and online shopping under the guise of self-appreciation risk disrupting long-term financial stability. When accumulated over a month, these consistent small expenses can drain savings and create new anxieties at the end of the month.
Essentially, rewarding oneself is an important step in maintaining mental health and a form of self-love. The main problem arises when fatigue is used as justification to buy goods or services that are not actually urgent.
To ensure that the good intention of self-appreciation does not trigger a financial crisis, there are several strategic steps that can be applied consistently:
Set a dedicated budget: Allocate a dedicated fund for entertainment or treats in a disciplined manner at the start of the month. Once that budget runs out, spending in this category must stop until the following month.
Apply the 24-hour waiting rule: When the urge to buy something impulsively arises, delay the purchase for at least 24 hours. This step is effective in distinguishing between genuine needs and momentary desires caused by temptation.
Choose non-material alternatives: Self-appreciation does not always have to involve a financial transaction. Activities such as getting adequate uninterrupted rest, walking in green open spaces, watching a film at home, or taking a warm bath are effective forms of self-reward that restore energy without incurring costs.
Maintaining healthy financial habits is a long-term investment and a form of protection for the future. By wisely distinguishing between substantive self-appreciation and mere consumerist temptation, personal economic stability can be preserved without sacrificing mental well-being.
