A Week Before Eid al-Adha, Goat Sellers in Denpasar Report Sparse Demand
Several sacrificial animal sellers in Denpasar, Bali, have lamented the subdued purchase of goats ahead of Eid al-Adha, which falls on Wednesday (27 May 2027). In previous years, demand for sacrificial animals had already been brisk for a week or six days before Eid al-Adha (H-6).
Rezky Setiawan, one of the goat sellers, said sales of sacrificial animals this year have declined compared with previous years. Rezky sells goats on Jalan Ahmad Yani, Denpasar.
“Still quiet. Last year H-6 or H-5 had already seen buyers. This year it’s still quiet, perhaps also due to the economy,” he said.
Rezky explained that he normally sells goats year-round rather than being a seasonal sacrificial animal trader. He usually imports about 70 goats of the Etawa breed and has been selling for a month before Eid al-Adha.
The goats sold by Rezky are sourced from Gobleg (Buleleng) and Bedugul (Tabanan). In addition to buyers from Denpasar, Rezky also frequently receives customers from Badung, Tabanan, and Gianyar.
There are also regular customers, eight to ten people, he added.
The price of goats sold by Rezky ranges from Rp 2 million to Rp 5 million and upwards. Rezky said that of the 70 goats prepared, only 20 have sold as Eid al-Adha draws near by a week.
“Only 20 sold. Daily, two or three goats are sold,” he added.
A similar complaint was voiced by Karim, a goat seller on Jalan Maruti, Denpasar. He says that consumer purchasing power this year has declined compared with Eid al-Adha moments in previous years. “Only around Rp 15 million so far, still quiet. Usually by H-6 it’s already busy,” Karim said.
