A tragedy not to be forgotten

A tragedy not to be forgotten

We urge the government of President Abdurrahman Wahid to
immediately start resolving the humanitarian tragedy of two years
ago (the 1998 May riots) by instructing the chief of police to
take the necessary steps toward a full investigation and
subsequently take the case to court.

In other words we do not want this tragedy to be shelved and
added to the list of unresolved cases. To do so would not only be
to contradict our stated resolve to uphold the law, it would hurt
the sense of justice of the public at large and particularly that
of the victims.

We appreciate the fact that President Abdurrahman Wahid is at
present facing many other no less pressing problems that are
waiting to be resolved. Nevertheless, we urge him to set aside a
part of his time to try to bring this human tragedy to a
satisfactory conclusion.
