A symposium on gender at Sheraton
YOGYAKARTA: An international Symposium on Gender in Sustainable
Development will take place at the Sheraton Mustika Yogyakarta
Resort and Spa for three days from Sept. 22, the organizers said.
Organized by the Center for Women's Studies at Yogyakarta's
National Development University, the symposium's central theme is
"Women, who make the world different."
It will discuss topics including the application of science
and technology; environmental issues and natural disaster
prevention; the management of natural, water, and energy
resources; community development; and community health and
wealth.
Among the speakers expected at the symposium include State
Minister of Women's Empowerment Sri Redjeki S, UNESCO Jakarta
director Prof. Stephen Hill, South African Ambassador to
Indonesia Noorman Mashabane, Prof. Aminah Abdulah of Malaysia,
and Syamsiah Achmad of LIPI.
Symposium organizer Diah Rini Ratnaningsih said an exhibition
of handicraft, batik and other products would also be held during
the symposium that will be attended by gender activists,
observers and scientists from 28 participating countries. --JP
