A simple life
A simple life
From Media Indonesia
The economic crisis hitting a number of Asian countries,
including Indonesia, has increased my concern about the future of
the nation. With the declining value of the rupiah, various basic
commodities will increase in price.
The crisis is also reducing the opportunity to expand the
range of work. If the government and public do not make changes
in policies and lifestyles, the problems will continue for a long
time and will only get worse.
I would like to propose the following:
1. The government and the community must be active in creating
a clean government by eradicating corruption, collusion and
bribes. One example of corruption in Surabaya occurs in the
making of ID cards. The official price of Rp 1,500 is never
adhered to. Instead, applicants are forced to pay at each stage
of the administrative process.
2. The government and society must exercise strict control on
revenues gained from the community. In Surabaya, many parking
attendants do not issue receipts for parking fees. They sometimes
give old tickets if asked for a receipt.
3. All of us should promote living economically, such as by
scaling back expensive programs. An official's induction ceremony
should be simple and economical. Upgrading courses despite the
unclear benefits should be stopped. Officials should set an
example for the simple life and not throw extravagant parties.
Wealthy citizens should also curb their desire to hold lavish
gatherings.
