A Series of "Gifts" from Prabowo for Workers on May Day 2026
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The commemoration of International Labour Day or May Day 2026 at Monas Square, Jakarta, on Friday (1/5/2026) became a moment for President Prabowo Subianto to announce a series of policies described as “gifts” for workers. These include protections for online motorcycle taxi (ojol) drivers, the formation of a layoff task force, and the ratification of the Domestic Workers Protection Act (PPRT). In front of thousands of workers filling the Monas area, Prabowo outlined these policies one by one, some of which were immediately met with cheers. Under the regulations, the government sets the applicator deduction for ojol drivers at a maximum of 8%. Additionally, the revenue-sharing scheme has been revised to provide a larger portion for drivers. “The revenue share, previously 80% for drivers, is now at least 92% for drivers,” Prabowo said at Monas on Friday. When figures of 20% and 15% were rejected, even 10% was deemed too high. “I say here, I do not agree with 10%. It must be below 10%,” he emphasised, which was immediately met with joyful cheers. Furthermore, the government mandates applicator companies to provide protections for drivers, including work accident guarantees, BPJS Health, and health insurance. This task force was established to address workers’ concerns about the threat of mass layoffs. “Do not worry, we will defend workers’ interests. Those threatened with layoffs, we will defend and protect you all,” Prabowo stated. He even emphasised that the state is ready to intervene if companies can no longer sustain their workers.
