A Series of Gifts from Prabowo for Workers: From the 1 Million Houses Programme to Ojol Income
President Prabowo Subianto delivered a surprise for workers at the 2026 May Day event held at the National Monument (Monas) on Friday, 1 May 2026. During the occasion, Prabowo outlined several new policies and instructions related to employment. First, Prabowo stated that he had signed Presidential Decree Number 10 of 2026 on the Establishment of the Task Force for Mitigating Termination of Employment and Worker Welfare. This decree on the Layoff Task Force will protect workers from layoff threats. “Don’t worry, we will defend the interests of workers threatened with layoffs, we will defend and protect them. If there are entrepreneurs who give up, don’t worry, our country is strong, our country will defend the Indonesian people. Don’t worry,” said Prabowo. Second, Prabowo promised to advocate for the provision of childcare facilities or daycare at workplaces, aimed at easing workers’ responsibilities in caring for their children. Third, Prabowo pledged to accelerate the construction of 1 million decent and affordable housing units for workers, built near industrial zones. Workers will be able to finance these homes with low instalments and a long tenure of up to 40 years. Fourth, Prabowo instructed state-owned banks (himbara) to launch people’s credit with a maximum interest rate of 5 per cent per year. Fifth, Prabowo has signed Presidential Regulation Number 27 of 2026 on the Protection of Online Transport Workers or Ojol Regulation. Under this regulation, online transport driver partners will receive occupational health guarantees and a minimum 92 per cent share of customer fares. “Ojol workers hard, ojol risk their lives every day, applicator companies demand a 20 per cent deposit, how can ojol agree to 20 per cent? How about 15 per cent? How much? 10 per cent? I say here I don’t agree with 10 per cent, it must be below 10 per cent. It’s too easy, you sweat, they get the money, sorry. If you don’t want to follow us, don’t bother operating in Indonesia,” Prabowo emphasised firmly. Sixth, Prabowo announced that he had signed Presidential Regulation Number 25 of 2026 on the Ratification of International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention Number 188, which covers protection and welfare for fishery vessel crews.
