A Seasonal Phenomenon: Why Motorcycle Sales Always Decline During Ramadan

Motorcycle sales during the Ramadan period typically experience a slowdown, a phenomenon recognised by industry participants as a seasonal pattern that occurs almost every year.

The management of PT Wahana Makmur Sejati, a leading Honda motorcycle dealer for the Jakarta-Tangerang region, stated that two-wheeler vehicle purchases indeed tend to decline when entering the fasting month.

“Motorcycle sales in the Jakarta-Tangerang area during the Ramadan period tend to experience a decline of approximately 10 to 15 per cent compared with the previous month. This represents a fairly common seasonal pattern,” said Wahana Makmur Sejati management in a statement to CNBC Indonesia on Wednesday (11 March 2026).

Changes in consumer shopping patterns represent one of the primary factors affecting vehicle sales during this period. Leading up to Eid al-Fitr, consumers typically divert spending towards other necessities such as household consumption and preparations for mudik travel.

“During this period, the public typically prioritises their needs in preparation for Eid al-Fitr and mudik preparation,” the management continued.

Nevertheless, industry players continue striving to maintain market momentum. Various sales programmes and additional services are being prepared to sustain consumer interest amid the seasonal decline.

Wahana assessed that market conditions typically resume movement after the Eid period concludes as consumer activity normalises.

“Usually after the Eid period, public activity and needs return to normal so motorcycle sales will also gradually increase again,” the management stated.

On the other hand, the company continues promoting the penetration of electric vehicles despite no longer receiving government incentives such as in previous years. To maintain market interest, the approach taken emphasises direct consumer experience.

“PT Wahana Makmur Sejati is committed to continuously introducing electric motorcycles to the public through various activities focused on consumer education. We consistently present educational programmes, test ride activities, and various attractive sales programmes,” the management said.

This strategy is considered important given that the electric motorcycle market remains in an early growth stage. Public understanding of electric vehicle technology is deemed uneven.

“In the process of marketing electric motorcycles, there are several challenges still being faced, one of which is the level of understanding among some members of the public that still needs continuous improvement regarding electric vehicle technology and benefits,” the management explained.

Despite facing several challenges, the company sees a growing trend of interest in environmentally friendly vehicles over recent years.

“Nevertheless, we observe that public interest in environment-friendly vehicles continues to develop, so education and direct experience become key in accelerating market acceptance,” the management stated.
