The Association of Muslim Intellectuals (ICMI) would like to express its deep condolences for the tragedy that has befallen the people and nation recently, particularly the catastrophe that occurred in Ambon, Maluku. ICMI prays that families of the victims would have the forbearance and that the victims get their appropriate places beside Allah.

ICMI also hopes that the security forces can take firmer measures in order to protect the people in Ambon -- native Ambonese and migrants -- because all people are legal citizens of this republic and may earn their living in any part of the Indonesian territory.

ICMI is deeply concerned with the emergence of the idea that a certain region belongs to a particular ethnic group. If this notion is allowed to prevail we fear possible disintegration in the future, which is totally undesirable.
