A Peek at the Specifications of KRI Canopus-936, the Indonesian Navy's New Vessel Built in Germany

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Indonesia will soon welcome KRI Canopus-936, the latest survey vessel for the Indonesian Navy’s Hydro-Oceanography Centre.

The vessel is reported to be sailing towards the homeland and is currently docked at Port Louis, Mauritius, Madagascar, on Friday (24/4/2026).

The ship set off on its maiden voyage from its construction site in Germany on Saturday (14/3/2026) towards Indonesia.

This voyage is part of the delivery process following the completion of construction and testing at the Abeking & Rasmussen shipyard in Lemwerder.

In a press release on Sunday (15/3/2026), Rear Admiral TNI Budi Purwanto from the Hydro-Oceanography Centre stated that the vessel is expected to enhance national hydro-oceanographic survey capacity due to its more advanced technology.

The operation of this modern survey vessel will provide support in supplying sea data and charts for navigation safety, Indonesian Navy operations, and the management of Indonesia’s waters.

KRI Canopus-936 is also described as part of efforts to modernise the Indonesian Navy’s main weapon system equipment in the field of sea surveying and mapping.

“Indonesia requires ocean-ranging sea survey facilities capable of operating independently, sustainably, and with high precision,” he said.

Abdul Kadir stated that KRI Canopus-936 is designed not only as a scientific survey vessel but also as a platform supporting non-combat military operations and maritime surveillance.

The construction of KRI Canopus-936 was carried out over 36 months by Palindo Marine shipyard, in collaboration with Germany’s Abeking & Rasmussen as the technology partner.

Through this scheme, the ship’s construction does not stop at the physical result.

“Technology transfer and enhancement of human resource capabilities are part of the process, expected to strengthen domestic shipyard capabilities in building ocean-going standard vessels,” said Abdul Kadir.
