A new pulse for Masela after a long wait

Almost three decades have passed since the Masela Block production sharing contract was signed on 16 November 1998 by Inpex, a major Japanese oil and gas exploration and production company. Following the contract signing, in 2000, gas reserves at the Abadi Field were discovered in the Masela Block, located in the Arafura Sea. The planned liquefied natural gas (LNG) production capacity is 9.5 million tonnes per year, plus condensate of up to 35,000 barrels per day and natural gas of approximately 150 million standard cubic feet per day. This makes the Masela project vital for bolstering Indonesia’s energy resilience. However, various challenges have accompanied its development process.
