A New Face for Padang's Satellite Markets: Preserving Tradition, Embracing the Future
Since dawn breaks, the pulse of life has always begun in the corridors of the market. Price haggling, the aroma of traditional cooking, and encounters between residents form the daily story that sustains the economic vein of the community. In Padang, West Sumatra, these spaces of the people’s economy are now being revived through the development of satellite markets that are cleaner, more comfortable, and possess a distinctive identity in each area.
For small traders, a stall in the market is not just a place to earn a living, but also a space to sustain family hopes. That is why, when a market is improved, what is actually being built is not only the physical structure, but also the economic future of the community. This spirit now forms the basis for satellite market development in Padang.
The Padang City Government continues to strengthen the development of eight satellite markets as centres of community economic growth in various regions. This effort is carried out through improving the quality of facilities and infrastructure, fulfilling the Indonesian National Standard (SNI), and developing the unique potential of each market.
Head of the Padang City Trade Office, Fizlan Setiawan, revealed that this standardisation is key to increasing the competitiveness of traditional markets against modern retail. Currently, two main satellite markets have successfully obtained this certification.
“Currently, Padang City has eight satellite markets. Two of them are already SNI-standardised, namely Pasar Alai and Pasar Tanah Kongsi. This year we are preparing Pasar Ulak Karang to become an SNI market as part of improving market service quality,” said Fizlan Setiawan on Saturday (13/6).
In addition to meeting physical facility standards, the development of satellite markets in Padang is directed according to the unique characteristics of each area. This aims to ensure that markets are not only places for basic goods transactions, but also social and tourism destinations.
Pasar Tanah Kongsi is one of the pilot projects for identity-based market development. This area will be developed as a heritage district that highlights the city’s historical richness.
With the right revitalisation touch, satellite markets are expected to become inclusive economic drivers, where small traders receive proper facilities and shoppers enjoy comfort while purchasing.
