A New Era: Six Women Now Hold Control of Indonesia’s Key Strategic Institutions
In recent years, the influence of women in leading Indonesia’s economic direction and important state institutions has become increasingly palpable. Figures such as Destry Damayanti, Puan Maharani, and Isma Yatun serve as evidence that Indonesian women are capable of leading highly strategic institutions.
At least six prominent women now occupy the highest positions in Indonesia’s strategic agencies:
- Destry Damayanti, the First Female Governor of Bank Indonesia
Destry Damayanti was officially appointed as the Governor of Bank Indonesia (BI) during a plenary session of the House of Representatives (DPR) today, Tuesday (1/9/2026). Her election marks a new chapter in the history of the central bank. Destry will be the first woman to lead BI since its establishment in 1953. Out of the 17 governors who have led BI, none have been women.
This appointment is a significant milestone in the history of Indonesia’s economic institutions. In recent years, strategic positions in the financial sector have increasingly been filled by women with strong technocratic track records. Trust in Destry did not develop overnight. Her career spans almost all the vital nodes of the Indonesian economy.
A graduate of the Faculty of Economics, University of Indonesia, who earned a Master of Science from Cornell University, she began her career as a researcher at the Harvard Institute for International Development (HIID) and LPEM UI. Her academic experience continued as a Senior Economic Adviser at the British Embassy in Jakarta.
Entering the financial sector, Destry is known as an economist who has long followed market dynamics. She served as the Chief Economist of Mandiri Sekuritas and subsequently as Chief Economist of PT Bank Mandiri (Persio) Tbk. This experience has made her adept at interpreting financial market movements, exchange rates, and investment trends.
Her career in the public sector began when she was entrusted as a Member of the Board of Commissioners of the Indonesia Deposit Insurance Corporation (LPS). She later became a Special Staff to the Minister of Finance before being appointed as Senior Deputy Governor of BI in 2019. During her time at BI, Destry was heavily involved in strengthening the monetary policy mix and deepening financial markets. BI launched instruments such as Bank Indonesia Foreign Exchange Securities (SVBI) and Bank Indonesia Foreign Exchange Sukuk (SUVBI) to expand Rupiah-based investment options and attract foreign capital flows. These instruments became part of the strategy to strengthen exchange rate stability amidst increasing global volatility.
On the other hand, BI accelerated the digitalisation of payment systems through the expansion of QRIS, the Indonesian Payment System Blueprint 2030, and the development of the digital economy and finance. These agendas were a primary focus during her tenure as Senior Deputy Governor. Her track record spanning research, financial markets, banking, regulation, and the central bank ensures that the leadership transition at BI occurs with a high level of certainty for market participants.
- Friderica Widyasari Dewi, the First Female Chairperson of OJK
Friderica Widyasari Dewi, also known as Kiki, has made history as the first woman to become the Chairperson of the Board of Commissioners of the Financial Services Authority (OJK).

Her career developed within the capital markets. She has served as Director of Development at the Indonesia Stock Exchange, Director of PT Kustodian Sentral Efek Indonesia (KSEI), President Director of KSEI, and President Director of BRI Danareksa Sekuritas.
In 2022, Friderica joined OJK as the Executive Head of Supervision of Financial Service Provider Conduct, Education, and Consumer Protection.
