A Look at Indonesians Buying SIM Cards Without NIK-KK, Here Are the Steps
Registration for new SIM cards using the National Identity Number (NIK) and biometric facial recognition began today, 1 July 2026. This replaces the previous verification method which used the NIK and Family Card number (KK). The new registration procedure is mandated by the Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Regulation No. 7 of 2026 concerning Customer Registration for Mobile Cellular Telecommunications Services, and is compulsory for new prepaid customers. Trials for biometric registration have been conducted since January 2026, with approximately 2.3 to 2.4 million users having registered using facial recognition. Registration can be completed at operator outlets and partner locations, as well as through each operator’s own platform. Customers simply need to enter their mobile number and national identity card details, then take a photo of their face for verification.
