A Large Rock Fell Onto the Highway
A large rock of substantial size triggered a landslide that completely blocked the national road connecting Trenggalek and Ponorogo at Km 16, in Nglinggis Village, Tugu District, Trenggalek Regency, East Java, on Tuesday at around 17:30 WIB. Stefanus Triadi Atmono, Head of the Trenggalek Regency Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), said the landslide occurred after heavy rain accompanied by strong winds had battered the area since this afternoon. ‘Earlier there was heavy rain and strong winds. The landslide material and the large rock then fell onto the carriageway. No vehicles were passing at the time of the incident,’ he said. Based on BPBD’s provisional assessment shared via its official social media account, a cliff about 50 metres high collapsed, causing the rock material to vault over a concrete barrier and fall in the middle of the carriageway. In addition to the large rock, soil and other material also blocked portions of the road.
