A Glimpse of Jakarta's Future Heartbeat as Thamrin MRT Station Prepares to Open
PT MRT Jakarta is preparing the Thamrin Transit Oriented Development (TOD) area as a key transport hub in the capital. The station is designed to be a meeting point for the North-South and East-West MRT lines, which is expected to transform public mobility patterns in Jakarta. “The station is quite long. If I am not mistaken, Thamrin Station will have eight or nine entrances, so the TOD’s reach can be extended to access the Thamrin area from various sides,” said MRT Jakarta TOD Planning Department Head Sagita Devi during a discussion with the media in Jakarta on Thursday (30/7/2026).
Entrances to Thamrin Station will be strategically located across several points, including the Indosat area, Jalan Medan Merdeka, Kebon Sirih, Bank Indonesia, and the Sari Pacific area. MRT Jakarta is also encouraging surrounding building owners to create direct connections to the station. Sagita noted that discussions are ongoing with several parties, including Wisma Nusantara, Pullman, and Plaza Indonesia, to establish such links.
Agus Trihan, Advisor for the Program Management Office at MRT Jakarta, stated that Thamrin Station will be the longest station in the MRT Jakarta network as it serves as the intersection point for the North-South and East-West lines. The company is also studying the possibility of connecting the Monas area to Gambir Station to further strengthen public transport integration in the city centre. “We are still in the planning and discussion phase for the connectivity to Gambir Station, whether it will be above ground or underground,” Agus explained. Construction of the Thamrin and Monas stations is targeted for completion and passenger service by the end of 2027.
