A farmer-friendly President needed

From Media Indonesia

Since the beginning of the reform movement, the life of farmers has remained unchanged. The various problems they are facing have continued to prevail and some now have even greater burdens.

Farmers have for a long time been haunted by high fertilizer prices and inability to repay debts. It is therefore necessary to ascertain the extent to which rural farmers really suffer.

With the colorful promises offered by politicians on the eve of the 2004 election, is there still room for farmers to pin their hopes on these figures for a better existence?

In reality, such pledges have so far brought about no improvement to the life of farmers. In the pre-reform period, their living conditions were relatively better.

As the nation goes to the polls soon, we really hope to elect a president who is truly concerned about the fate of our farmers.
