A Double-Edged Sword: Support for Israel May Cost Germany UN Security Council Seat
The loss of a nearly certain seat on the UN Security Council has caused considerable embarrassment among German diplomats. It is no secret that Berlin has previously won without opposition or emerged as the favourite in all previous votes. Germany is the second-largest contributor to the UN, and the recent voting process was led directly by its former Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock, who currently serves as the President of the UN General Assembly.
However, all that prestige faltered during the vote to obtain a non-permanent seat on the Security Council. Why did this happen? According to the spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, Baerbock tends to make mistakes and is highly pro-Israel, proving to be more of a hindrance than a help.
“Over the past year, nations have experienced the misfortune of seeing a representative of the German political elite, Annalena Baerbock, serving as President of the UN General Assembly. They have decided not to take any more risks,” she stated via Telegram. Following the vote, Russian media reported that Germany ‘failed’ to secure its seat on the UN Security Council, returning ‘empty-handed’.
