A disavowal of one's citizenship

A disavowal of one's citizenship

From Media Indonesia

A Jakarta newspaper reported on Aug. 18 about Indonesian
nationals -- holders of Indonesian passports -- who have enlisted
in Singapore's military draft. It is cause for concern because
Indonesia does not recognize dual nationality. It precludes its
nationals from joining military service in another country
without the permission of the government.

An investigation should be made into the problem, which cannot
be justified under any circumstances. In fact, their act can be
categorized as disavowal of one's nation and homeland. What is
their motive to join the military draft in Singapore? Does
Article 30 of the 1945 Constitution not state clearly the subject
of defending one's country? Every citizen is entitled and obliged
to participate in the defense of the country.

I appeal to all Indonesian citizens to consider the matter
seriously before taking steps and not to be influenced by
inducements to join another country's draft.
