A Different Eid al-Fitr for Iran Amidst War Against US-Israel
There is something different about Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijriah for the people of Iran. They had to celebrate the day of victory amidst the war situation with the United States (US) and Israel.
Thousands of Muslims performed Eid al-Fitr prayers in Iran, which fell on Saturday, 21 March 2026. According to AFP on Saturday (21/3/2026), Iranians performed Eid al-Fitr prayers, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan a day after most other Muslim countries.
At dawn, crowds of worshippers gathered at the Grand Imam Khomeini Mosque in central Tehran, named after the founder of the Islamic Republic.
Due to space limitations, many worshippers performed prayers outside, with state television broadcasting images of the crowded areas around the mosque, despite the risk of attacks.
Iranian television also broadcast citizens performing Eid prayers in other parts of the country, including in Arak in the centre, Zahedan in the southeast, and the city of Abadan in the west.
For information, Iran’s capital is still being bombarded to this day. Iran has been bombarded almost every day since the joint US-Israel attack initiated the war on 28 February, which killed high-ranking officials, including the supreme leader of the Islamic Republic.
Mojtaba Khamenei Conveys Eid al-Fitr Greetings
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei also continued to celebrate Eid al-Fitr amidst the war with the US and Israel. He even extended Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijriah greetings to all Muslims.
Seen on the X account on Saturday (21/3), Mojtaba wrote that this year the spring of spirituality and the natural spring—that is, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha—coincide. Mojtaba extended greetings to every Iranian citizen for these two religious and national holidays.
“I extend greetings to all Muslims in the world for the opportunity to celebrate Eid al-Fitr,” wrote Mojtaba.
In his post, Mojtaba expressed condolences and sympathy to all families and the victims, martyrs, in the war against Israel, the January coup attempt, the war against US-Israel, as well as the security and border martyrs.
“In the past year, our people have experienced three military and security wars. The first war was the June war, when the Zionist enemy, with special assistance from the United States and in the midst of negotiations, killed around 1,000 of our citizens,” he stated.
