A Common Driving Habit That Makes Motorbikes Less Fuel-Efficient
Solo — Kompas.com. Many riders complain that their motorcycles’ petrol consumption is wasteful, yet without realising, their own riding habits are often the main cause of fuel running out more quickly. Habits such as abruptly opening the throttle, maintaining high engine revs, and frequent acceleration and braking cause the engine to work harder than necessary. In such conditions, the amount of fuel required to produce power rises, hence fuel consumption becomes more wasteful. ‘Each person, with their skills, knowledge and personality, including the motorcycle they choose, will surely have a strong influence on riding style, and riding style will greatly affect fuel consumption,’ he told Kompas.com recently. For example, people with a fast or aggressive riding style will obviously consume more fuel. ‘The more power you exert, the more energy input is required, and the more fuel is needed as well,’ he said. ‘If you frequently do that, the engine will often have to rev up, which will also require more fuel than normal,’ said Victor. ‘That is why you should ride with a stable style, including the correct gear position (for sport motorcycles), and try to keep the engine operating in economically efficient conditions, typically at speeds around 50-70 km/h, so the fuel consumption will be in its best range,’ he continued. Victor emphasised that all of this simply requires knowledge, self-control and getting used to operating the vehicle properly.
