A clearer picture of Japanese animation

JAKARTA (JP): The world has come to know Japanese animation in recent years for its unique and daring artistic style. Indonesia's youth is well-acquainted with popular cartoons such as Sailor Moon and comics like Dragon Ball Z.

Members of the public wanting to learn more about how Japanese animation has developed -- there are comics from the land of the rising sun for seemingly all tastes -- should try a workshop organized by the Indonesian Animators Association in cooperation with the Japanese Cultural Center.

The workshop will be held from Oct. 19 to Oct. 21 at the Japan Cultural Center, Summitmas building, Jl. Jend. Sudirman, Central Jakarta, and on Oct. 23 to Oct. 25 in Surabaya. Featured will be Yasuo Yamaguchi and animator Koichi Tsonuda. Yamaguchi, executive director of Toei Animatios Co. Ltd., Japan, is the planning producer of various TV animation, such as Candy-Candy, and animation for wide-screen movies.

Yamaguchi will provide an introduction to Japanese animation, Tsunoda will show his skills and the two will join forces in a session on "Review and Criticism" on Indonesian animation.

The workshop is intended for artists, animators, TV station staff members, Japanese language learners, members of the print media and other members of the public with an interest in Japanese animation. Invitations are available from the Japanese Cultural Center in Jakarta (tel. 520-1266). Spaces are limited. (47)
