977 birds seized in Bakauheni joint operation released into the wild

A total of 977 birds seized during a joint operation against wildlife smuggling at Bakauheni Port, South Lampung, have been released back into their natural habitat after being declared healthy and fit for the wild. The release took place in the Register 3 protected forest area on Mount Rajabasa, Way Kalam Village, Penengahan District, to ensure the animals can adapt immediately and maintain ecosystem balance.

Ahmad Setianegara, Head of the Bakauheni Port Service Unit for Lampung Quarantine, confirmed on Saturday that the birds were confiscated from a bus the previous day. “A total of 977 birds seized from the bus yesterday have been officially released back into their native habitat after identification confirmed they were suitable and met the standards for release,” he said.

He explained that the release was part of a wildlife rescue effort and an initiative to preserve biodiversity after the birds were secured in an integrated surveillance operation at Bakauheni Port. The birds were being sent to Java without official documentation.

Ahmad stressed that synergy between the police, quarantine officials, and other relevant agencies will continue to be strengthened to tighten surveillance of animal traffic at Sumatra’s gateway, enabling early prevention of smuggling attempts. Beyond law enforcement, the measure also aims to ensure wild animals remain sustainable in their natural habitats and to prevent the potential spread of pests and animal diseases through the movement of animals that do not meet quarantine requirements.

“We appreciate the synergy of all parties involved in foiling this attempt. Lampung’s position as the gateway to Sumatra will continue to be tightened so that we can jointly sever smuggling routes like this,” said Ahmad Setianegara.
