93 Elementary Schools in Bekasi Regency Adopt Child-Friendly Libraries to Support National Programme

In conjunction with National Children’s Day 2026, Bekasi Regency is strengthening its commitment to providing safe and comfortable learning environments by implementing the Child-Friendly Library Programme. A total of 93 elementary schools (SD) in the region are now part of this national initiative, which seeks to enhance literacy culture from an early age.

Muhaidin Darma, Secretary of the Bekasi Regency Community Reading Forum, stated that the programme is not merely about providing quality books but also about building a literacy ecosystem. This includes support from the Ministry of Education and active mentoring through activities such as read-aloud sessions, storytelling, educational games, and arts. “The momentum of National Children’s Day reminds us that every child has the right to a comfortable and enjoyable learning space,” he said during an event in Central Cikarang on Thursday.

Despite the progress, field assessments have identified significant challenges. Many schools still require more representative library spaces, essential equipment like bookshelves, and a wider variety of reading materials to maintain children’s interest. Muhaidin noted that existing book collections are often quickly exhausted by eager students. The literacy movement in Bekasi Regency is further supported by approximately 100 volunteer-managed community reading gardens (TBM), which organize mobile reading sessions, nature-based learning, painting, and traditional games. He called for stronger collaboration between local government and the private sector to expand library facilities and resources.
