90-Year-Old Grandmother in Grobogan, Central Java, Raped by 31-Year-Old Man
A man in Grobogan, Central Java, has been arrested by police for sexually assaulting an elderly woman.
The Grobogan Police Chief, AKP Sunarto, said the perpetrator was a 31-year-old man with the initials RU, while the victim was a woman aged 90.
Sunarto said the suspect was arrested on Wednesday (15 July) following a report from the victim’s family. He said the suspect was arrested at his home by officers and then taken to the police station for questioning.
“From the results of the investigation, the Grobogan Police Criminal Investigation Unit succeeded in securing RU at his residence without resistance. The suspect was then taken to Grobogan Police Station to account for his actions,” said Sunarto on Thursday (16 July), quoted by detikJateng.
“In addition to securing the suspect, Grobogan Police also seized a number of items of evidence believed to be related to the criminal act as part of the investigation process,” he added.
Sunarto emphasised that solving this case reflects the National Police’s commitment to protecting the public, particularly victims of sexual violence.
“Every report from the public is followed up professionally, objectively and in accordance with legal procedures,” said Sunarto.
The perpetrator is charged under Article 473 paragraph (1) of the Criminal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of 12 years’ imprisonment.
He explained that, according to the police investigation, the sexual assault took place on the night of Monday (29 June) at the victim’s home. At the time, the victim was alone in the house because her family were attending a condolence gathering.
“At that time the victim was alone at home after her family members went to attend a condolence visit in the surrounding neighbourhood,” said Sunarto.
“It is believed the suspect took advantage of the situation. The suspect, who was at the victim’s house, then carried out his act,” he added.
The perpetrator, he said, lives in the same village as the victim.
“The victim attempted to resist, but is believed to have been subjected to violence and threats, allowing the perpetrator to carry out his act,” he explained.
“Because there was violence and threats of violence, it falls into the category of rape,” Sunarto added.
Shortly afterwards, the victim’s family members returned home and caught the perpetrator in the act.
“Upon noticing the presence of the victim’s family members, the perpetrator stopped his actions and immediately left the victim’s house,” he explained.
Sunarto said the victim then recounted the incident to her family, who reported it to the police.
“The victim, who was still in a traumatised state, then told her family what had happened to her. The incident was then reported to the village officials and forwarded to Grobogan Police Station,” he said.
