A total of 9,551 prisoners and juvenile inmates in Central Java received remission and sentence reductions on the occasion of the 81st Anniversary of Indonesian Independence, Monday (17/8).

Central Java Governor Ahmad Luthfi said that remission is not merely a reward, but a moment of evaluation so that inmates improve themselves, engage in productive activities, and do not repeat criminal acts.

Luthfi encouraged inmates to make use of the rehabilitation period to build discipline, skills, and readiness for independent living after returning to society.

“I ask the inmates here to be able to recover after undergoing the legal process. This is important so that it does not happen again and has a deterrent effect when they are later back in society,” said Luthfi while attending the remission ceremony at the Class I Prison in Semarang.

Of the total recipients, 9,516 were prisoners receiving General Remission and 35 juvenile inmates received General Sentence Reduction. A total of 254 prisoners and one juvenile inmate received remission or sentence reduction that allowed them to be released immediately.

Head of the Central Java Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections, Mardi Santoso, said that remission recipients are spread across 58 correctional technical implementation units throughout Central Java. The current number of inmates in prisons, detention centres, and juvenile correctional institutions reaches 14,619 people, consisting of 14,351 prisoners and 268 detainees.
