883,000 porn VCDs destroyed

JAKARTA: Some 883,000 pornographic video compact discs (VCDs) were destroyed at an office of the North Jakarta Police on Friday.

"The porn VCDs were netted in recent raids of two locations -- Pluit Mas and Penjaringan," chief of North Jakarta Police precinct Sr. Comr. Andi Chaeruddin told reporters.

Witnessing the event, in which the VCDs were crushed under a moving rolling machine, were Mayor of North Jakarta M. Subagyo, local public figures and the alleged key distributor of the porn VCDs, identified as Hendrik.

Officer Chaeruddin said the suspect could be charged under the Law on Copyright and Article 40 of Law No. 8/1992 and Article 52 of the Criminal Code (KUHP) on pornography. --JP
