81st Indonesian Independence Day commemoration at KBRI Tokyo held solemnly

The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia (KBRI) in Tokyo held a series of events to commemorate Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day, conducted solemnly and modestly.

“The independence of the Indonesian nation is both a gift and a mandate for all of us to fill this independence with our best work for the nation and state,” said Indonesian Ambassador to Japan and the Federated States of Micronesia, Nurmala Kartini Sjahrir, in her speech at the Independence Day ceremony at the Indonesian School of Tokyo (SIT) in Japan on Monday.

In a press release from KBRI Tokyo, Nurmala said that during 68 years of Indonesia-Japan relations, the two countries have achieved many things and are now pioneering a number of priority areas of cooperation ahead of the 70th anniversary of bilateral relations.

“In this regard, I would like to invite all Indonesian citizens in Japan to strengthen friendship by maintaining good relations and complying with all legal rules and social norms applicable in Japan,” said Nurmala, accompanied by Deputy Ambassador Maria Renata Hutagalung.

Meanwhile, the raising of the Red and White Flag was carried out by the 2026 KBRI Tokyo Paskibraka officers from SIT students, who had previously been trained by cadets of the Indonesian Armed Forces Academy at the National Defense Academy in Yokosuka, Japan.

The event also included the awarding of the Satya Lencana medal to Indonesian civil servants who have served for 10 and 20 years in ministries and non-ministerial government institutions.

On that occasion, KBRI Tokyo also expressed deep sympathy for the earthquake disaster in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). Ambassador Nurmala invited all Indonesian citizens to pray for the victims.

In addition to the Independence Day commemoration ceremony and gathering of Indonesian citizens, KBRI Tokyo also held a number of activities, including a karaoke competition and the serving of Indonesian archipelago cuisine.
