A Brief Overview of the TNI
The Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) was born during the Indonesian struggle to defend independence from Dutch threats, who aimed to re-colonise Indonesia through armed violence. The TNI is an organisational evolution that began as the People’s Security Agency (BKR). Subsequently, on 5 October 1945, it became the People’s Security Army (TKR), and to improve its structure in accordance with international military standards, it was changed to the Indonesian Republic Army (TRI).
In subsequent developments, the government’s efforts to perfect the national army continued alongside the struggle to uphold the sovereignty and independence of the nation. To unify the two armed forces—the TRI as the regular army and various people’s struggle organisations—the President officially ratified the establishment of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) on 3 June 1947.
The primary duty of the TNI is to uphold state sovereignty, maintain the territorial integrity of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia based on Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia, and to protect the entire nation and all Indonesian territory from threats and disturbances to the integrity of the nation and state.
