81 Years of Indonesian Independence, Regent Wempi Realises the Right to Nation and State
Malinau Regent Wempi Wellem Mawa interprets 81 years of Indonesian independence as the achievement of something that is every person’s dream. According to him, that dream can be realised by providing certainty and stability for the community.
“There is no success if a country is not conducive. Therefore, the state must be present to ensure everyone can be safe and comfortable,” he said.
Regent Wempi said independence means the freedom to express hopes, as well as the awareness to carry out duties and responsibilities as citizens. “I understand that independence is our freedom to express hopes and fulfil our duties and responsibilities in this nation and state,” he said.
He stressed that independence is the right of every nation, which is realised through the fulfilment of the people’s basic rights. “From the right to life, to obtain work, to receive health services, to expressing opinions responsibly,” he said.
In the spirit of Independence Day, Regent Wempi hopes Indonesia will continue to progress as a nation, that its people will love the homeland more deeply, and that its leaders will become more united in building the country. “In Malinau Regency, every independence commemoration is a moment of reflection on the achievements we have made together,” he said. “We also hold various community activities as an expression of joy and gratitude that this nation remains strong, united, and continues to move forward.”
This year’s Independence Day commemoration carries the theme “A Sovereign, Just, and Prosperous Indonesia”. For Regent Wempi, the theme is a reminder that every citizen has an equal right to receive services and enjoy the fruits of development.
“Infrastructure is a basic need for everyone. Therefore, we are obliged to facilitate it so that the community, including those living in rural areas, can experience equitable and just development,” he said.
Regent Wempi has five priority programmes as a manifestation of the state’s presence for the community. These programmes are designed to strengthen regional sovereignty, improve citizens’ welfare, and ensure fair and equitable development.
The five programmes are the Healthy Agriculture Programme (PESAT), the Malinau Maju Compulsory Education Programme, the Excellent Village Graduates Programme, the Independent Millennial Programme, and the Malinau Smart Government Programme. “These are the five programmes I am implementing, and I believe they can answer the needs of the Malinau community,” he said.
Regent Wempi wants the younger generation in Malinau Regency to become masters of their own land in the future. “We want to ensure that our human resources are able to compete with workers who come to this country,” he said.
Good and superior human resources, said Regent Wempi, will eventually be able to solve the problem of poverty and utilise existing potential. “Quality human resources are the answer to a Golden Indonesia, a strong Indonesia, a prosperous Indonesia, with superior people. And my aspiration is to deliver that,” he said.
