802 hospitals below standard

CIREBON, West Java: 802 of 1,112 hospitals in the country have
not fulfilled the primary accreditation standards set by the
health ministry.

"Only 310 hospitals or less than 30 percent have met the
standards, indicating the low quality of medical services given
to the public," said Muhammad Sulaiman, director of the medical
care directorate at the ministry, on Tuesday.

The main reasons for the low quality service were the lack of
proper facilities and professional medical staff, he said.

Hospitals failing the meet the minimum standards set by the
government were all located outside Java, and "the ratio of
medical personnel in Java and outside the island stands at 70 to
30 percent," he added. --JP.
