80% of Disaster-Affected Areas in Sumatra Cleared of Mud
The mud clearance process following the disaster in Aceh Province, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra provinces continues to demonstrate significant progress. By early March 2026, the majority of affected locations have been successfully cleared by the Task Force for Rehabilitation and Reconstruction (PRR) Acceleration following the Sumatra Disaster, in coordination with several related agencies.
Amran, Spokesperson for the PRR Task Force for Post-Disaster Sumatra, stated that the mud clearance process is an important component of the post-disaster rehabilitation phase because it directly relates to the recovery of community activities, including residential areas, public facilities, and road access.
“Mud clearance is part of the post-disaster rehabilitation phase intended to restore community access and ensure public facilities can resume functioning,” he said in a written statement on Monday (9 March 2026).
This was conveyed during a press conference held by the PRR Task Force for Post-Disaster Sumatra at the headquarters of the Ministry of Home Affairs in Jakarta on Monday (9 March).
Based on the latest data from the PRR Task Force as of Monday (9 March), of the total 508 locations targeted for mud clearance across the three affected provinces, 406 locations have been successfully cleared, representing approximately 80%. Meanwhile, 102 other locations are still undergoing treatment.
Aceh Province has the highest number of clearance locations. Of the total 455 locations targeted for clearance, 366 locations have been completed, whilst 89 other locations are still in the process of work.
Meanwhile, in North Sumatra Province, clearance work is being conducted at 24 locations. Of this number, 11 locations have been completed and 13 other locations are still in the process phase.
In West Sumatra Province, the mud clearance process has been fully completed. A total of 29 affected locations have been successfully cleared, achieving 100% progress.
On this occasion, Amran also cited several educational facilities in East Aceh that have been completely cleared, both inside buildings and in surrounding areas.
“Several schools such as Lokop Primary School and Junior Secondary School in Lokop District, East Aceh, for example, have been 100% cleared, both inside classrooms and in the school environment,” he concluded.
