80.4 tonnes of waste from Independence Day celebrations cleared

The Jakarta Environmental Agency (DLH) has stated that approximately 365 cubic metres, or the equivalent of 80.4 tonnes, of waste left over from the 81st Independence Day ceremony and the People’s Party has been fully cleared.

Yogi Ikhwan, Public Relations Officer of DLH DKI Jakarta, said in an official statement received in Jakarta on Tuesday that 1,200 personnel were deployed in two shifts to carry out cleaning operations at various activity points in the National Monument (Monas) area, the HI Roundabout, and along Jalan Jenderal Sudirman-Thamrin.

The operation was carried out from the time the events took place until the morning, through cleaning and sweeping of a number of points to keep the central celebration area clean and comfortable while supporting the return of normal public activity.

“After the series of events concluded, officers immediately carried out cleaning and sweeping in stages until the morning so that the public spaces used for the celebrations are comfortable again for the community,” said Yogi.

In the Monas area, officers worked in two sessions, namely from 10.00 to 18.00 WIB, then continued from 18.00 WIB until the early hours of the morning.

The cleaning operation was also supported by various facilities and infrastructure, including 16 inorganic tipper trucks, 12 mini dump trucks or cross vehicles, 12 compactor trucks, 14 road sweepers, 35 dust bins, 1,200 sacks or plastic bags, as well as sanitation facilities in the form of 20 toilet buses, nine clean water tanks, and seven waste water tanks.

In addition to carrying out cleaning, DLH DKI also placed segregated waste bins at a number of activity points to make it easier for the public to dispose of waste properly while building the habit of sorting waste at source.

“We see that more and more people care about the cleanliness of public spaces. This is what we want to continue building together,” said Yogi.

According to him, cleanliness management in large-scale events requires collaboration between the government, organisers, officers, and the public.

Therefore, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is committed to continuing to strengthen the readiness of cleaning services while encouraging waste reduction at source.

“The independence celebration is a space of togetherness. We hope that spirit is also reflected in the way we look after Jakarta,” Yogi said.
