8 Areas in North Sulawesi Remain on Tsunami Alert
The Meteorology, Clito-matology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has announced that several regencies and cities in North Sulawesi are currently under a tsunami early warning alert following a magnitude M7.7 earthquake in the South Mindanao coast, Philippines.
“We hope that residents continue to comply with the recommendations from local governments, particularly the regional disaster management agencies,” said Ricky Daniel Aror, Coordinator of Data and Information at the Bitung Maritime Station, when contacted in Manado on Monday (8/6).
The following list of areas remains under tsunami alert status as released by BMKG:
Sangihe Islands Regency
Talaud Islands Regency
Manado City
Northern part of North Minahasa Regency
Northern part of Minahasa Regency
Northern part of South Minahasa Regency
Bitung City
Northern part of Bolaang Mongondow Regency
Meanwhile, the ‘alert’ category includes East Bolaang Mongondow Regency, South Bolaang Mongondow Regency, and the northern part of South Minahasa Regency.
Previously, on Monday, 8 June 2026, at 06:37:42 WIB, the South Mindanao coast of the Philippines was struck by a tectonic earthquake. BMKG analysis shows the updated parameters of this earthquake indicate a magnitude of M7.7. The epicentre of the earthquake was located at coordinates 5.80° N; 125.14° E, specifically in the sea at a distance of 244 kilometres northwest of Karatung Island, North Sulawesi, at a depth of 47 kilometres.
